Proper cargo stowage is the way to go for a good voyage. Whether it is breakbulk cargo in the hold of a vessel or stowed on a flatrack, or in a container stack, it must be properly secured.

Rolling only… you ask.

Unfortunately, you also have five other types of motion that your cargo will likely encounter on her ocean voyage.

Did you know that a flatrack landed atop a Post Panamax container vessel on a normal trip across the North Atlantic can experience a high number of rolls (port to starboard and back) on the ship while in transit? How many you might ask. That depends on the vessel, take the large Post Panamax vessel that lost containers in 2019. The vessel reportedly had a GM of 9.01 meters, and a breadth of 59 meters. Using the formula (Rolling Period in seconds = (0.797 x Breadth)/square root of GM) would give a period of 15.7 seconds for 5503 rolls per day or about 55,000 total rolls for a ten day transit.

Let’s hope they had a good Marine Insurance policy for their cargo…
