This is a great charity that Captain Clauhs has been involved in since its modern day inception in 2000. Captain Clauhs has been a volunteer with the Society since 2000 and served on the board of directors from 2000 to 2012, and as board President from 2007 to 2011.

The Society has its roots all the way back to 1821 when they established the ‘Mariners Church’ at 50 Church Street downtown Charleston.

From their website, “Each year, more than 65,000 seafarers arrive on hundreds of vessels to the Charleston Port. Most crews consist of persons from diverse third-world countries and from many cultures. Three to four nationalities are common for one vessel, with a crew of around 25 seafarers. Many are lonely, away from home and their families for up to a year at a time. The need and opportunity for ministry to these brothers and sisters is tremendous.

On an average the Seafarer volunteers serve over 800 ships, serve 5000 officers and 15,000 crew members in the ministry centers, and provide at least 1700 transportation trips to help crew with personal needs. Our volunteers log over 7,000 hours of service to these men and women each year.”

Donate to the Society or get involved, they are always looking for volunteers. Call (843) 856-7046 or send an email to chapssmail@gmail.com to get in touch with Clark Cromwell or Fr. Jeff Wallace.

What Joy we find on the vessels!
